Driving from Atlanta, we arrived in New Orleans the following day. Driving south, and into the storm damaged areas, was like driving into a post apocalyptic nightmare as we first encountered hundreds of vehicles driving north as their occupants fled the area. Next was the debris. It first appeared as broken branches stretched as far as the eye could see, then tree trunks and vehicles and, finally, boats and houses could be seen scattered on and around our route towards New Orleans itself.
Arriving in New Orleans we saw armed guards posted on all national retail stores, banks and government buildings.
